Yes, that is our supposition for Preview as well.
Re: the shape of the text widget
Is it the rounded edge or the little magnifying lens that indicates
that it's a search widget? When the field is in the command line
mode, the rounded space could be used to indicate this, for example
put a ">" or something like that.
Yes, we wanted to have an icon in the rounded space to differentiate
between the different modes. We also wanted the hint text to change
dynamically in each App area to show you what kind of item you'd be
creating by default (Note, Message, Task, Event) but I believe those
2 features would have required quite a bit of work and have been
deferred to Post-Preview.
