On platforms I normally use, Linux and Windows, control-arrows advance the
cursor by words in any text entry field. (Outside text widgets it might
vary from application to application.) Pressing shift at the same time
expands the selection by words. So yes, it could be a context issue, but
from what I know, once it's declared as a menu shortcut by WX, there is no
overriding it in individual widgets, so there can't be any distinguishing
of context -- if it's a menu shortcut, it cannot be anything else in the
app.
Personally, I hardly ever use the shift combination (that's why it never
even occurred to me that it might be a problem when Jeffrey suggested it
instead of ctrl-arrow, which I think I originally reported as bug 7463),
but it definitely has become ingrained as part of the standard editing
palette and if something else happens instead, it feels pretty jarring.
FWIW, alt-cursor seems fine - I'm already used to its being used for
navigating back and forth in the browser history in Firefox and editor
history in Eclipse. Not quite the same thing as navigating the calendar,
but not too alien either. I'm not sure whether you care about keeping
keyboard shortcuts consistent between Chandler and Cosmo though, as
alt-cursor almost certainly wouldn't work there.

P.S. Nice adaptation there Jeffrey! Is this the kind of brain wave one can
only get at the end of a long day? :-)

Um, do I need to reply in rhyme as well?
Could this be framed as a context issue?
What does Ctrl/Cmd-Shift-Left Arrow/Right Arrow do?
When editing a text field versus Not editing a text field?
How much do we care about people using Chandler on multiple platforms?
What does Outlook do?

Hi Folks,
We've fiddled with the keybindings for next week/previous week several
times. I'm sad to say I'm not done fiddling.
The Devil went south of Market
He was looking for a soul to steal
Actually, he was looking for some keys to bind
Preview was a teensy bit behind
And he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came upon this young Windows user
Using the keyboard and playin' it hot.
The devil jumped up on a Herman Miller chair and said,
LOL
"Boy let me tell you what:
I bet you didn't know it,
but I'm a keyboard user too,
and if you'd care to type a bit
I'll show you something cool.
If you hold down ctrl+shift+left arrow
You'll go to the previous week"
The boy said, "My name's Johnny
And it might be a sin
But I'll try your keybindings,
But you're gonna regret
Because they're bound to something else.
The Devil opened up Chandler,
And he pulled his fingers across the keys
And it made an evil hiss
Then a band of demons joined in
And moved the the date around.
When the devil finished Johnny said,
"Well you're pretty good ol' son!
But sit down in that chair right there
And let me show you how it's done!"
He opened up Notepad (run boys run)
Typed off some gibberish like "rising sun"
Hit ctrl+shift+left to select the previous word
Granny does your Chandler do this? No, child, no
The devil bowed his head
Because he knew that he'd been beat
"Perhaps Alt+Left and Alt+Right would work better
For Windows users at least?"
