Matthew, Jeffrey and I are going to participate in a sprint next week, focusing on improving the usability of open source software. This sprint is the fifth in a series; Mimi and I participated in the first sprint.

More information about the sprint:

Eugene Kim helped organize the original sprint (as well as subsequent sprints). His agenda is to foster a larger community, bringing together user experience and open source communities.

This time around, we're paired up with some folks at Oracle. Oracle has offered us time in their testing lab next Thursday (before the sprint kicks off).

Which brings me around to the discussion I wanted to kick off: What should we test at the lab session? What should we focus on during the sprint? (I say "we"; Jeffrey and Matt are the important participants here, and ultimately the drivers of what happens at the sprint).

What do we want to get out of the testing session and the sprint?
- Insights about the usability of some specific part of Chandler (Hub/Server and/or Desktop)
- Iterative design/coding to improve Chandler (based on the insights)
- Tools/techniques for structured usability investigations
- Connection to a larger community interested in usability of open source software

Due to some constraints on Oracle's end, the logistics are going to work out better for testing Chandler Server/Hub at the lab session. It would be great if the lab testing session set up the sprint activities.

Some ideas for the lab session focus:
- date/time entry
- getting started workflow (creating account, etc.)
- overlays

Some ideas for the sprint session:
- follow up on the lab session experience (overlays, date/time entry, getting started workflow, etc.)
- initial experience on the desktop (improved with bigger data set?)
- parsing in quick entry field (ultimately useful for both desktop and hub)

Cheers,
Katie
