Matthew focused in on a few of these designs, and did a series of
Javascript prototypes:
The current behavior:
http://www.fleegix.org/demo/floss_usability_2007/proto_0.html
Alternate layout: http://www.fleegix.org/demo/floss_usability_2007/proto_1.html
- Checkboxes on right, so they're less prominent
- Disabled checkbox when collection is selected
- Added "Active: Some collection"
Another layout: http://www.fleegix.org/demo/floss_usability_2007/proto_2.html
- Keep "Active: Some collection"
- Use eye to display overlaid state
- Distinguish between always overlaid (black eye) and overlaid-
because-selected (eye with colored background)
- Allow overlay to toggle even when the collection's selected
I think proto 2 works the best. +1
When i was watching the demo today I was thinking of something
different and I thought i would throw it out there.
I was thinking about what i would be like to actually flip the current
UI. So the checkboxes would become a radio button where only one could
be selected and highlighting the collection name would would select
and deselect it from the overlay.
I know this a departure from what other UIs have been doing for
overlays this is just what seemed intuitive to me.
