Ubuntu | gamin

------- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2006-01-14 12:29 UTC -------
The problem with gam_server using a lot of CPU is easy to reproduce. I'm
running Kubuntu 5.10 with gamin 0.1.5-0ubuntu1.
Currently gamin is using no CPU, however simply browsing with Konqueror to a
folder on a NFS mount which contains around 7000
jpeg photos will make gam_server use 25% CPU. Closing that folder or simply
browsing to a smaller folder will reduce the CPU
to normal levels again.

I've also once had the memory problem, where gamin was eating up over 1 GB of
memory. 'killall gam_server' solved that,
although after it respawns its CPU usage remains what it was before.

I've had similar problems before with FAM on Debian, and since I don't need it
(I can refresh files myself when I REALLY need
it, which is almost never) I simply deinstalled it and never looked back. The
same however is impossible with gamin on
Kubuntu, as trying to remove it will remove almost all of the KDE applications
as well.

Having the option to remove gamin completely would be nice, because I don't
think monitoring any large number of files over a
mountpoint/filesystem that does not support somekind of native notification
system will ever be fast.
