Read up on hal a bit.

I removed the entry from /etc/fstab and watched /var/log/syslog as a
right-clicked to mount the "Steve's iPod" device.  It went through
iso9660, fat, vfat, ntfs, etc (but not hfsplus) filesystems on
/dev/sdf2.  Interesting, the device is hfsplus and /dev/sdf3.  I guess I
still don't understand how hal or gnome-vfs2 generates this list of
names.  There are others that are perplexing like "Generic Storage
Device" (1-4) that don't do anything and I don't know what they refer
to.
