The issue is the colored part right? That's an issue of the cairo variant of
poppler, I switched the package to splash again, that fixes the issue:
poppler (0.5.0-0ubuntu5) dapper; urgency=low
.
* debian/control.in, debian/rules:
- build without libcairo
