Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu and gnome-applets to you
use? Could you try this:
1. remove mixer applet from the panel
2. start /usr/lib/gnome-applets/mixer_applet2 from the terminal
3. add it to the panel again
4. <do stuff>
5. try to logout and see if something appears on the terminal
