Hm, the current default for esd *already* is to auto_spawn:
auto_spawn=1
spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 5
spawn_wait_ms=100
so default_options is ignored anyway. Thus, esd does not run by default, it is
just activated for apps that actually want it. gstreamer uses direct ALSA-dmix
output if available.
Did you manually modify your esd.conf?
