As you already indicated yourself, this is a configuration issue rather than a bug. The error you're getting indicates TLS encryption is required. In the account's preferences, under the "Sending email" tab: set security to "TLS encryption" (and the server to "smtp.gmail.com", authentication type to "Login", and the user name to your gmail account name if you hadn't already done so). The password will be asked for when it's needed.
