You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Binary package hint: gnome-control-center
Enabling effects then closing and re-opening Appearance Properties shows
the radio button set to "No effects" every time. Disabling effects them
becomes an exercise of enabling effects again, causing Compiz to go
mental and crash, and then disabling it again to get Metacity back.
During this process there is often a crash in compiz.real.
