Not the original reporter, but I can confirm that this still affects me
on latest gutsy (upgraded from feisty, no fresh install).

As a temporary workaround, I found that I can manually lock the screen
and still hibernate through the "Stand-by" key on my keyboard.

Can't tell anything about suspend, because it fails -- and used to fail
in feisty too, so nothing new :-(
