Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gdm
I have a screen connected via DVI passthrough on my T61 docking station.
xorg is able to both detect the monitor and detect the resolution. This
bug occurs booting both with the lid open and with the lid closed.
When running GDM to log in or switch users, it refuses to display on the
external monitor, and displays ONLY on the laptop screen. The monitor
reports "Out of Range". The display is totally wrong, though -- the
laptop screen is 1440x900. The external monitor is 1920x1200. As if to
compromise, the desktop displays at 1600x1200. Since this doesn't fit on
the laptop screen, it is cropped. Incidentally, the screen does not pan
when moving the mouse, so I can't access any options on the bottom part
of the GDM screen.
To test this out, I created a new user.
GDM was only displayed on the laptop screen for these cases:
1) logging in for the first time
2) switching from a logged-in user to a non-logged-in user
Switching between logged in users uses the screensaver apparently, which is not
affected.
After logging in for the first time under a new user account, the screen
is also only displayed on the laptop (and at the same odd resolution).
For some odd reason, entering the Screen Resolutions preferences and
changing the resolution from 1600x1200 to 1920x1200 changes back to the
external monitor; what's more, changing BACK to 1600x1200 still displays
on the external display (and rightly so -- 1600x1200 is a supported
resolution of the monitor).
So in summary -- GDM does not display on an external monitor, and passes
these settings to the first login of a new user. The new user can easily
switch to the external monitor, but it remains impossible to log in
without opening the laptop lid to see the screen.
