Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After the last round of updates around 10/13, not only did the greeter
crash in gdm but I lost all my compiz settings. Upon reapplying the
settings and setting up desktop cubes again, I noticed I had only 2
desktops and upon testing out the cube, the entire system froze.

Here is a background of what I have done (some of it may have caused
this)

Attempted to get dual monitor support working (another major bug)

Installed restricted ATI driver (fglrx)
ran xorg setup (sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg)
ran screens adn graphics in control center and attempted to setup dual monitor
and run radeon fglrx as my video card.
xorg kept crashing so I restored my xorg backup and rebooted
Ran system updates and used computer as normal
shutdown computer
restarted the next day to find that the message "greeter has crashed" looped.
pressed ctrl+alt+backspace to get to login
logged in and removed ati restricted driver
re ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
setup compiz custom settings again including enabling wobbly windows and
desktop cube
tested cube by rotating it back adn forth
after about the 5th rotation, the screen froze and forced my to hold the power
button to restart

my system is a dell inspiron 8600 laptop running an ATI radeon 9600 as the
video card
