You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Sometimes X11 programs take ages to start, there is no CPU activity and
the programs seem to wait for something. Same affected programs are
gthumb, openoffice, totem, but e.g. firefox is not affected. The
behaviour does not always occur, but if, then it happens for all
programs.
Here's a strace from gthumb:
