I think I had the same bug.
It randomly happens when I start gnome, and ONLY since I upgraded to Ubuntu 
7.10.
The Desktop Manager prompts me for user/pass, I give it them, then it launches 
the Desktop.
About 80% of times the "splash progress bar" (loading this and that) doesnt 
appear, then I get the Desktop without bars and anything.
I did CTRL ALT F1 and symlinked a shell to desktop, then I could live again :-)
I have compiz and beryl installed...
A friend of mine suggested me to move ".gnome2" dir of my home.
I did it, but the bug remained.

I attach my .xsession-errors but I dont find anything useful.
