I am not arguing to remove the statusbar completely. I am well aware of its usability features and am completely in favor of keeping it. When mail is being checked, a message appears in the statusbar. That message has a border around it and that border - not the message itself - isn't usabile. In fact, it makes the message more difficult to read. I will report this bug to upstream.
