Thank you. This fixed the immediate problem of no response from the software and no request for me to enter passwords. I assume this was a change in the default settings between 6.10 and 7.10, since things worked as I expected in 6.10.
There is still some flakiness in connecting to a server. Sometimes I have to request it, then force Nautilus to quit because it is hanging. Once Nautilus restarts I can simply click on the server folder that appears on the desktop and everything works as expected: 1) request for password; 2) a window appears with the directory structure of the server. I have only had a chance to test this on the ssh servers I have access to. I will investigate the flakiness some more as that could be a network issue. If I can pin it on Nautilus I will make another bug report. I think my bug is not a bug and has been solved. Do I have to close it or will somebody else? Thanks again.
