This happened to me last night. I am running 7.10 and have various desktops installed with Gnome as the default. I do not use Mythbuntu.
I allowed an automated update manager update to complete, then shut the machine down. When I started again GDM logged me into XFCE instead, it being the first one on the list. I had to log out and force a gnome session.
