I have a similar problem. Ever since I started using compiz, totem gets the apect ratio wrong. Totem-gstreamer, totem-xine, all get the aspect ratio inverted (3:4 instead of 4:3). Using up-to-date gutsy, nvidia drivers, and compiz.
