You have been subscribed to a public bug:
On a home network without any windows domain server or any special DNS
server config (just normal DHCP and public internet DNS). Do this:
1. Boot Gutsy Live CD
2. Select "Places::Connect to Server..."
3. Fill in service type "Windows share" and enter hostname (not IP, and note
that the hostname should be a LAN hostname only, not something that can resolve
over the global internet DNS, and this is a clean liveCD so this hostname is
not known by unbuntu resolve.conf etc) to windows machine plus a network share
name on that machine (which should exist).
4. A shortcut to this share is created on the desktop. Click it to open the
share folder.
5. Ubuntu will now show the error message saying that "Folder contents cannot
be displayed". This error message is the most generic error I have ever seen,
it gives you absolutely NO IDEA about what went wrong and you have no way of
fixing it.
As it turned out, I tried this "Connect to server..." thing again and
instead of using the hostname of the windows machine I entered it's IP
address (the 192.168... local LAN addr) and then it asks for a user/pass
so that got me past the problem I had above).
This bug is about the bad (too generic) error message. It's absolutely
crucial that you provide more information (maybe a little "DETAILS" link
could be added).
