I'd expand on this slightly and allow the user to pick from a list of formats which should be used for audio preview. If the user selects a codec that is not found on the system (via Gstreamer), it should ask the user if they would like to install it (again, making note of legality).
Nonetheless, the current implementation is very broken. There is no coherence to it and several codecs just do not seem to work with audio previews, FLAC for instance.
