You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Starting with the hardy current upgrades from today (2008-01-31) the lock
screen is broken, instead of displaying the normal grey box.
When activated, a black screen is displayed and only the mouse pointer is
visible, which can be seen if moved outside this box (that now is invisible).
Entering the password blindly doesn't help and it's impossible to login, only a
reboot or a forced xserver restart is necessary to regain normal operations.
