I'm sorry for the late follow up to this but my laptop's video card died on me, and I just replaced it. Anyway, I upgraded to Dapper with the 2.6.15-9 kernel and there doesn't seem to be much news.
With hald running my system continues to lock up when attempting to resume from the second suspend cycle, just like before. However, even if I kill hald, I can't suspend/resume infinitely. My third suspend cycle fails completely. Instead I get an unresponsive console (I can still switch ttys and use the keyboard - it even echos my input on the screen) that scrolls "hdc: lost interrupt." If I keep using the keyboard, sometimes I get some messages like "psmouse.c: bad data from KBC - timeout" (might be a different message - I couldn't reproduce it) and my keyboard will become unresponsive. Also, I performed the same hald experiment from before. I couldn't set --drop-privileges though. The last bit of output I get before a lockup is: [D] hald_dbus.c:1192: udi=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/temp/118, key=storage.cdrom.dvd There's also a bunch of lines before that, that are exactly the same except for the ends are cdr, cdrw, hddvdrw, etc. instead of dvd. The final line tells me: BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0! At least it knows. :) Unfortunately, the disk doesn't get a read off to save the output from hald in time. Just in case though, my kern.log (http://www.veravirtus.com/kern.20060330.log). Please let me know what else I can do to provide more info.
