Ok, so I discovered this has nothing to do with deskbar-applet, but is in fact a fault in the "Preferred applications" program. Choosing "Mozilla Thunderbird" as my mailprogram gives the command "mozilla-thunderbird mailto:%s"; which is wrong. Changning my mailprogram to "Custom" and entering "mozilla-thunderbird %s" did solve things.
