This is a "wishlist bug".
The original poster would like to be able to use the additional capabilities of
the extended views (e.g. the scientific view) also in the basic view. In
particular, typing parentheses and using expressions like "e^..." should be
possible via the keyboard (the real one, not the displayed buttons). His main
reason for not using the scientific view is that it is too large for his
800x600 display.
