Does connecting ftp.gnome.org work by example? What does "gnomevfs-ls
ftp://ftp.gnome.org"; say? Do you have a firewall or something than may break
ftp when using passive or active mode? Do you have a proxy configured for GNOME
(system, preferences, proxy)?
