I don't think getting around the issue is the solution. Evince is the official pdf viewing application for Gnome and should be able to work out of the box. Also, acroread does not work straightforwardly for amd64. Plus it is a software one has to add manually, just like xpdf. So fact is Ubuntu would greatly benefit from this issue being fixed before Hardy release, as I see now in the headers of the bug that it was declined for Gutsy and transposed to Hardy.
