Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon
- System: Hardy 32-bit, x86 Dell server hardware. Fully updated packages as of
06-Mar-2008.
- I've set up Xvnc remote access since this is a server-room machine and I need
to administer it from a remote workstation. (apt-get install vnc4server ; or
apt-get install vncserver. Same problem with either package).
Steps to reproduce.
1) Everything works fine logging in locally in the server room.
2) Set up Xvnc remote login via VNC (cmd line: Xvnc :1 -query localhost
-geometry 1280x1024 -depth 16 -once -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc
-DisconnectClients=0 -NeverShared passwordFile=/root/.vnc/passwd
-extension XFIXES)
3) Run vncviewer from a remote desktop ("vncviewer servername:1"), GDM
login screen comes up fine. Login.
4) The gnome-settings-daemon restarts over and over upon login, and
eventually gives up with "restarted too many times" message.
5) Open a terminal window and start gnome-settings-daemon manually:
gnome-settings-daemon
6) Open any other window, or close any other window. gnome-settings-
daemon crashes with following error message:
The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
(Details: serial 2686 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
...
This "BadWindow" crash in gnome-settings-daemon occurs every time you
open or close a new window.
I'm no pro at this but after following the problems with gnome-settings-
daemon and the Xrandr extension, perhaps the Xvnc server is also not
providing some feature that gnome-settings-daemon is apparently in need
of?
What other info can I provide that will help pinpoint this bug?
