Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

System: Ubuntu 8.04 hardy 64bit

Reproduce: start hardy in safe mode and select "root drop to root shell
prompt". Then type 'sudo startx' (does not work without sudo even though
root?). Gnome starts gnome-panel appears and then disappears before it
can be interacted with.

I then created a launcher for gnome-terminal and ran gnome-panel from
there to get this output.

"** (gnome-panel:5306): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus:
failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such
file or directory

**(gnome-panel:5306): CRITICAL **: dbus_g_connection_get_connection: assertion
'gconnection' failed
segmentation fault"

gnome gdm is virtually useless without this

** Affects: gnome-panel (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
