In Hardy Beta, when opening the login window preferences dialog
(/usr/sbin/gdmsetup) for the first time after login it takes well over a
minute to go from the password dialog to opening the actual preferences
window. During this time CPU load is not above normal system idle,
however the HDD is being accessed for a brief instant about twice every
second. This bug is related to the gdm package. This bug was
experienced on a Toshiba laptop, 1.5GHz Centrino, 512MB ram(at 400mhz).
