Compiz worked OOTB during and after the install.
After I disabled it in gnome-appearance-properties, I can't turn it back on.
It does work when running it via the terminal, though:

Unfortunately there is absolutely no error message whatsoever when starting
gnome-appearance-properties. It just wants to install the proprietary fglrx
driver without a reason why.
