Similar problem here, solved by uninstalling the xserver-xgl. Acer Aspire 3023WLMi ATI Radeon Mobility X700, on fglrx; Gnome displayed bad GTK theme, no entry chimes, some programs crashing, the catalyst control center didn't work. With no xserver-xgl now it is all stable.
