Public bug reported:

Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
[Running Dapper]

Nautilus is very slow to populate the window when i opening folders that
contain numerous files.
For example today I happened to look in my ~/.thumbnails folder, which contains
about 10,000 files. It took about 2 minutes (litterally) before it would start
displaying anything. So for all that time, it left me with noting but an empty
window to look at. Actually I nearly thought it was crashed and was about to
kill it, when it suddenly dared to display something.

The same problem happens, to a lesser extent of course, with any other folder
that contains any significant number of files.
It would be good if it could populate the window instantly, and load the
remaining files, in the background, with an option to cancel
