You guys RULE!
thanks, it turned out a ptython module got compiled bad, so my whole gnome got 
"messed" up..
I removed the package by editing postinst prerm postrm script to not update 
gconf-defaults, then continued te broken upgrade. It then turned out a python 
module wouldn't istall also, so I did apt-get install --reinstall 
python2.4-minimal, then all the insallation went like a charm. Cheers!!
