If I log out and log back in, the trash icon will be missing. The
applet is apparently there, because I tried adding the trash applet
about eight times in a row to no avail, but when I rebooted there were
eight trash icons in the panel.
So the applet is there, and you can add multiple instances of it, but
the icon disappears and the only way to fix it is to reboot.
