Look in your Xorg.0.log for a line like:

(II) RADEON(0): Max H-Image Size [cm]: horiz.: X  vert.: Y

That line is what your monitor is reporting of its true capabilities,
and is provided directly from the monitor manufacturer.

Now simply take X and Y, and then calculate the diagonal:  D = sqrt(X^2
+ Y^2) / (2.54 cm/in)
