You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Go to System->Preferences->Appearance, Visual Effects tab, select None
so that metacity window manager is used.
Now press Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor. Browse into
Apps->Metacity->General, find the compositing_manager option and
activate it to enable compositing in metacity. Now deactivate
compositing_manager, metacity crashes.
On hardy beta.
