You have been subscribed to a public bug:
When you drag a file on the desktop selector it does not change active
desktop.
To reproduce it do click on a file, and without giving up it drag it on the
desktop selector, on one different desktop from the assets nowadays.
Now it should change the active desktop, but this does not happen.
