Mark, rosetta translates package but also have translations for product. You can register gaim has an upstream project and use it for upstream translations, that's what xchat-gnome is doing by example: https://launchpad.net/products/xchat-gnome/+series/trunk/+translations, upstream just has to update the .pot for the project and collect translation using https://launchpad.net/products/xchat-gnome/+series/trunk/+pots/xchat-gnome/+export
Note that you can translate from the web interface or ask for the current po, change it locally and upload your updated version then. The interface doesn't change too much afaik, Jordi?
