I believe this bug is fixed. I just tried a daily livecd build from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily- live/current/ (specifically http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current /hardy-desktop-amd64.iso dated April 9 8:34AM) and my laptop comes right up in its native resolution with no operator intervention at all. I haven't done an install yet, it was enough to see the splash screen and get to the desktop at 1440x900.
