In the changelog of totem I found the following:
totem (2.21.95-0ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low
* Support auto-loading subtitles when the suffix is upper-case
So that might be interesting to test.
Looking at totem in Gutsy there was no option regarding auto-loading
subtitles, so perhaps it was done by default, and then when the option
was added in Hardy it is off by default.
