Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Settings not working properly when booting from Live CD using 8.04
Desktop RC1 disc. When settings daemon fails it causes theme to not be
applied and panel applets to fail on startup. I have not (and do not
plan to) installed to hard drive to test for bug so this bug has only
been tested from the Live CD.

Steps to reproduce:

Boot from disc

Choose English (default) on language selection menu

Choose first option to boot without changing existing installation on
computer

Wait for screen with Ubuntu logo and progress bar

Eventually light brown background shows with working mouse cursor

Following message pops up:
"There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The last error message was:

Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-
settings-daemon" (Input/output error)

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log
in."

Wait for system to continue starting

When background shows and panels start to show more errors pop up, which look
to just be all the standard applets failing due to the settings daemon failure.
Here are the messages from the individual dialogs:
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_NotificationAreaApplet".

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_ClockApplet".

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_WorkspaceSwitcherApplet".

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_WindowListApplet".

The panel encountered a problem while loading
"OAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet".

I have tested the boot process two times with the exact same results
both times. The only difference in boots was that once I was connected
to the network/Internet while for the second boot I was not.

System details:
Dell Latitude D620
Intel integrated video card: Intel 945 GMA
2GB RAM
100GB Hard drive with Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop installed
wireless network card present but disabled with hardware switch
