the upstream spatial mode doesn't close directories when opening new ones, the ubuntu change was a try to reply to users complaining about the number of dialog open on screen, it didn't get really good users comment because it was giving an impression of jumping dialogs though. the spatial mode has been changed to the upstream behaviour several cycles ago and the default installation to use the browser mode, after this change we didn't get requests from users to revert the change or use the modified spatial mode again, since the changes have been there for a while and there was no user request to change the behaviour to what it was the ubuntu specific changes have been dropped during this unstable cycle, there was no real user reactions to this change which means a really small number of users was still using this one and it's not worth the efforts for ubuntu to have distribution specific changes
