On 2 my computers where I've Ubuntu Hardy Heron installed I can to see one of other machine at network place (network:/// on nautilus) which isn't running Ubuntu (currently this other machine is running Madriva 2007). I did suspect that is something related to authorization policy as gvfs claims for authentication (password to default keyring) in order to connect the network machines (I did see that when I tried out to connect using sftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]), while this isn't necessary on Mandriva machine, but it's just a 'guess'...
