gtk_gl_area_new is a function from libgtkgl2.0 and i'd have fallen back to use that one (see /usr/share/doc/libgtkgl2.0-dev/HOWTO.txt, "2. How do I make any widget an opengl widget?") but your approach looks a lot better, especially because it doesnt add a new dependency. if it works with 2.14.1, i'll happily include it ... -- Poor performance / flickering with OpenGL hacks https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/22045
