In addition, mouse keys still work, it just seems to be the mouse device that's disabled - This is a standard ps/2 mouse - in xorg.conf, the device node is set as /dev/input/mice.
If I cat the device, totem actually seems to stop the device working completely - It stops receiving input as soon as totem loads (and resumes as soon as totem quits).
