I can also confirm all this, on my i915GM. The workaround I've been using is to first start xine, then start totem, then quit xine. Totem's logo then loads so slow I can watch it paint each pixel - yay! -- Totem 1.4.0: Crash on startup (workaround inside) https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35229
