Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Yesterday gnome-volume-manager got into a state where it could no longer
mount external drives. The drives appeared in the 'Places' menu and also
in the 'Places' window in nautilus, but clicking on them had no effect.

There was no error information whatsoever reported by dmesg (or in any
of the system log views), only the usual messages like

[ 2651.681313] sd 22:0:0:0: [sdi] Attached SCSI disk
[ 2651.681346] sd 22:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg8 type 0

ie showing that the drive was recognised.

When I ran nautilus as root, it could mount/unmount the drives (although
it kept segfaulting, with for instance "nautilus[28230]: segfault at
4a00002c rip 7f1f8bac1f0f rsp 7fff9706e280 error 4" reported), so it was
a permissions problem or an authentication problem.

Restarting hal (sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart) had no effect.

What fixed it was restarting dbus (sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart).

There are two bugs here: (1) the original bug where nautilus/gnome-
volume-manager lost permission to mount/unmount, and (2) the fact that
no error information whatsoever was reported. Since I can't reproduce
(1), I thought it worthwhile still to report (2) - nautilus/gnome-
volume-manager should at least report if it hasn't got permission to
mount a drive due to a failure elsewhere in the system.

Other information: I could not alter the screen brightness until I
restarted dbus - the little window appeared when I pressed the keys, but
the brightness bar was empty and the brightness did not change.

Version information:

Ubuntu 8.04 (amd64)
nautilus 1:2.22.2-0ubuntu5
gnome-volume-manager 2.22.1-1ubuntu6
dbus 1.1.20-1ubuntu1
hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8.1
