I'm using Hardy and I'm having a similar problem. If I leave Evolution
open and minimized, it seems to be all ok for quite some time, but if I
try to plug in an usb external drive or, say, change the wallpaper (and
when I want to change wallpaper I might spend some time with the
appearance window open), Evolution starts using 500mb of ram! Sometimes
(that goes for when I plug an external drive) I can't even get it
closed, because the system hangs entirely, so the only option I have
left is to force a reboot.

At first I thought it was something with the external drives (well,
maybe it is), but just now it happened when I had the appearance window
open, and when at last I could close it and open the system monitor, I
noticed how much ram Evolution was using, and it was minimized!

I'm not much of a geek expert, but let me know if there's anything I can
do to help.
